From Sculptures to Sturgeon: How Port Huron Is Kicking Off Summer

Though the calendar says summer doesn't officially start until June, 21st, the warm weather events are already starting to go into full swing in the Blue Water Area. Especially in Port Huron this weekend.

Starting at 10 AM on Saturday, June 3rd is Be a Tourist in Your Own Town which features many of Port Huron’s signature attractions and many at no charge. Be A Tourist is a chance for visitors and area residents to discover and rediscover the attractions and history that brands Port Huron the Maritime Capital of the Great Lakes.

Explore the River Walk, tour Michigan’s oldest working lighthouse, see how a Sea Cadet training ship operates, learn the history of ice harvesting, see the original train depot Thomas Edison worked in as a young inventor and take part in kids science activities. There is something for everyone to enjoy. Port Huron has a variety of downtown restaurants and a collection of art sculptures located throughout the city.

See the list of the things to see and do at Port Huron's Be A Tourist In Your Own Town here.

The Blue Water Sturgeon Festival offers close encounters with lake sturgeon, the “Gentle Giants of the Great Lakes”. It kicks off at 8 in the morning this Saturday with
Run With The Sturgeon, a 5K race and 1K fun run along the beautiful Blue Water River Walk on the shores of the St. Clair River. At 10 AM the festival opens at the Great Lakes Maritime Center and Vantage Point. Check out the full list of activities at the Sturgeon Festival's website.

The Port Huron Art Initiative is kicking off their year-long outdoor sculpture exhibition with an art-filled picnic on Saturday too.

The day will feature 20 new sculptures along the Thomas Edison Parkway, guided sculpture tours, art talks, sculpture demos, kid-friendly art activities and more. Live music will be provided from local favorites like Mountain Babies and Gasolines Gypsies to name just a couple. Visit the Port Huron Art Initiative's website to see all the things they have happening.

Other events in the area this weekend include the Scale Model & Radio Controlled Boat Show in St. Clair, Harbor Beach's Pro King Fishing Tournament on Saturday and The Polar Bears-WWI Battalion Sent to Siberia Lecture at the Sanilac County Historic Village and Museum in Port Sanilac on Sunday.
